Black Mountain is really a NW-SE igneous ridge with a series of low peaks. My pictures were taken in a series of hills, the Riley Peaks, on the NW side of Black Mt. I don't know what about the mountain is particularly dark.

Looking north-northwest from the Riley Peaks, 4/9/06. The peak at right is Steeple Rock, with Mount Royal to its left.

Looking southwest from the Riley Peaks, 4/9/06. The green stripe in the distance is the valley of the Gila River, with the town of Virden somewhere towards the right side. The nearer mountains are the Peloncillo Mts., the distant range at upper right is, near as I can tell, the Dos Cabezas Mts.
